Principal Andy McGrath

Andy McGrath

This is my ninth year as a principal in the Tahoma School District and my 39th year working in education.  I began my career as a high school math teacher in the Renton School District where I also coached soccer and tennis.  My first administrative job was as an assistant principal and athletic director at Eatonville High School.  I then became the principal at Eatonville Middle School followed by six years as principal of Glacier Middle School in the White River School District.  The last nine years I have been the principal at Cedar River Middle School and now Maple View Middle School.  It has been quite a journey with many challenges but I can truly say I have enjoyed every day and every year.

Opening this school has been a great challenge and the most gratifying part of my career.  Helping to create a new model for the 6 -8 middle school program in an outstanding physical plant has been a wonderful gift from the community to our students.  They are thrilled with the campus, the increased electives selection and the high level of rigor that they can choose from in selecting their schedule.  This is a great place for students to attend.

The most important part of our school is the consistent belief system of the staff, or as we call it “our why.”  Our purpose is to maximize every student’s academic achievement by connecting them to their school through positive relationships with adults and peers and creating a sense of belonging for all.  We know that the key to a student’s success is for them to feel like they belong and fit in to their school so we make this a priority.  I hope you see this belief system every time you visit out school.  Please ask questions if you do not understand something that we are doing and find a way to be involved with our school.  It is a great place filled with great staff and most importantly great students.  I look forward to seeing you soon.  Go Bears!

Dean of Students Pam McKinney

Maple View Middle school is now in its third year, and we are learning things daily about how to come together to create the kind of community we are proud to be a part of.  Our emphasis is how to promote kindness, inclusiveness, and the idea that “everyone has a story” and it’s worth listening to. I am so looking forward to helping students learn about themselves as they are successful as well as when they make mistakes. Some of our best learning is when we experience failure. Our teachers are thoughtful, encouraging, hardworking, and dedicated to this process. I know that parents play an important role in how their students arrive every morning, how invested they feel in school, as well as helping them to discover where their skills will best support Maple View in becoming its "best self". Thank you for your support and positive input as we team together to help your students Become "Excellent, Accepting, Respectful, and Safe" members of our school and community.
